The Event

The concept of patriotism has fallen on hard times. This is not to say that patriotism is on the verge of disappearance but that it has become increasingly difficult to justify. Is love of country a virtue and, if so, what kind of virtue is it? Why should love of country take precedence over other kinds of loyalties? Does loyalty to my own country force me to overlook the flaws in my country? And how is it even possible to love a country composed of millions (maybe billions) of people one can never even know? Steven B. Smith, the Alfred Cowles Professor of Political Science at Yale, will seek to answer these questions in defense of "enlightened patriotism" during his talk on May 14.

Steven B. Smith is the Alfred Cowles Professor of Political Science at Yale where he has taught since 1984. Professor Smith is the author and editor of several books on Hegel, Spinoza, Leo Strauss, Abraham Lincoln, and Isaiah Berlin. His Yale course online has been viewed by thousands of people around the world. His new book "In Defense of Patriotism" will be published in 2021 by Yale University Press.
