The Event

From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were popular and scientific speculations about the linkages between climate, air pollution, and COVID-19: will warm weather slow the spread of COVID-19? Does air pollution affect the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and make COVID-19 more severe? In the meantime, worldwide efforts to control the pandemic profoundly impacted our social life and economic activity, leading to unprecedented changes in air pollution emissions and concentrations.

On July 9 (EST) / July 10 (Beijing Time), Kai Chen, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology (Environmental Health) at Yale School of Public Health, will discuss on the complicated interactions between climate, air pollution, and COVID-19 from an environmental health perspective.

Dr. Kai Chen is Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Yale School of Public Health and Director of Research at the Yale Center on Climate Change and Health. Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering in 2016 from Nanjing University in China. During 2014-2015, he served as a Visiting Scholar at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Prior to joining the Yale School of Public Health faculty in July 2019, he was an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoc Fellow at Helmholtz Zentrum München-German Center for Environmental Health.

Dr. Chen’s research focuses on the intersection of climate change, air pollution, and human health. His work involves applying multidisciplinary approaches in climate and air pollution sciences, exposure assessment, and environmental epidemiology to investigate how climate change may impact human health. His recent work examines the role of meteorological factors (temperature, humidity, and UV radiation) in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in the United States and the potential health benefits of air pollution reductions during the COVID-19 lockdown.
