The Event

China's upcoming generation of musicians promises to transform the landscape of classical music over the coming decades. What obstacles and opportunities will they encounter along the way? How might they serve as a bridge between China and the wider world?

A new summer training program and touring orchestra will debut in Carnegie Hall this July. Robert Blocker, the Henry and Lucy Moses Dean of Music at Yale University and Senior Advisor for Global Artistic Affairs to the National Youth Orchestra of China (NYO-China), will host a discussion with NYO-China’s students, instructors and administrators about music and music education in China today.

Mr. Feng Yu, President of Central Conservatory of Music and Mr. Xiaogang Ye, Chairman of Chinese Musicians' Association and famous composer, joined this event.

The Speakers

Robert Blocker
Henry and Lucy Moses Dean of Music, Yale University, Senior Advisor for Global Artistic Affairs, NYO-China

As a world-renowned pianist, educator, and administrator, Robert Blocker has served as the Henry and Lucy Moses Dean of Music at Yale University since 1998. Throughout this tenure, he has been active in outreaching around the world and within China specifically, and was named as honorary Professor of Piano at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing in 2006.

Vincent Accettola (16' BS)
Managing Director, NYO-China

A recent graduate of Yale University (16' BS) and Harvard University (17' MA), Vincent Accettola serves as NYO-China’s Managing Director and is responsible for articulating and preserving its core mission. Outside of NYO-China, Vincent is CEO of Athena Education Group, a Manhattan-based startup, developing education solutions for international students.

Nicholas Brown (16' BS)
Director of Project Development, NYO-China

Nicholas Brown serves as NYO-China’s Director of Project Development and is responsible for architecting the major components of the program’s training residency and concert tour. Nicholas graduated from Yale University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics, where he also performed as a violinist in the Yale Symphony Orchestra.

Sabrina Xu
Project Director, NYO-China, President, U.S. - China Youth Education Solutions (YES) Foundation

Sabrina Xu, a recent UBC Earth and Ocean Science graduate (16’ BS), Columbia University Climate and Society (18' MA) candidate, is NYO-China’s Project Director. As President of US-China Youth Education Solutions Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting cross-cultural understanding and cultural exchange between the youth in the U.S. and in China, Sabrina is committed to empowering and helping young people, as well as bridging cultural divides between American and Chinese students.

Guang Chen
2017 Trumpet Teaching Artist, NYO-China; Professor of Trumpet at the Central Conservatory of Music

Guang Chen is NYO-China’s 2017 Trumpet Teaching Artist. He currently serves as Associate Professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, the Chief Executive Director of China’s Orchestra Academy, and the Visiting Principal Trumpeter with the China National Symphony Orchestra.

Lin Miao
Violist, 2017 NYO-China, Central Conservatory of Music

Miao Lin is a member of NYO-China’s viola section. She currently studies with Zhen Su, Director of the Viola Department at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and also serves as a member of the China Youth Chamber Orchestra.

Hanyu Feng
Violinist, 2017 NYO-China, Middle School Attached to the China Conservatory of Music

Hanyu Feng is a member of NYO-China’s 2017 violin section. She began learning violin when she was 4 years old and currently studies with Professor Yuan Fang at the Middle School Attached to the China Conservatory of Music.
