We sincerely invite you to join the "Columbia-Yale New Year Concert 2020" on January 11. Renowned musicians will be presenting you with classical music composed by great figures at different times. Let’s celebrate the coming new year with marvelous music together!

Co-hosted by Yale Club of Beijing, Columbia University Alumni Association of Beijing, and Yale Center Beijing.

The The Performers

Zhaorong Chen (M.M. '01)
Professor of Flute, China Conservatory of Music

Zhaorong Chen currently serves as Professor of flute at the China Conservatory of Music. He is the first mainland Chinese flutist to receive a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in the USA. After he graduated from the University of Bridgeport, he continued his studies and achieved a Master of Music degree from Yale University. As a flutist, Chen has performed in the world's most prestigious concert halls, such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Woolsey Hall and Sprague Memorial Hall at Yale University, Musical Hall at the National Center for the Performing Arts.

Bo Li (M.M. '09)
Violist

Bo Li has received his Master of Music Degree at Yale School of Music, and MBA at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has served as Co-Principal Violist at Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for many years, where he had great opportunities to work with world-renowned musicians, such as Yo-Yo Ma, Gil Shaham, Vladimir Ashkenazy, and Maxim Vengrov. He gave the China premiere of the complete viola version of the Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites in 2005, which was positively received by local media and the audience. He is also a prize winner of several International Music Competitions and has been interviewed by domestic and international media and magazines.

Bo Zhang (M.M. '13)
Cellist

Bo Zhang graduated in 2013 from the Yale School of Music with a Master of Music degree in cello performance and was awarded the Aldo Parisot Prize, an honor given to gifted cellists who show promise for a concert career. Since 2013, Zhang Bo has been pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto under the tutelage of Shauna Rolston. He joined the School of Music at the Minzu University of China in 2018.

Shawn Moore（M.M. '13)
Violist

A keen chamber musician, Shawn was a founding member of the Kalmia String Quartet, which performed and recorded numerous works by American composer Joseph Summer, and can be heard on Parma and Albany Records. As a solo artist, Shawn makes regular appearances at the Geneva Music Festival and the Bard Music Festival, concerts and music festivals in China, Korea, and Thailand, and other engagements throughout the world. As an admissions officer for Bard College, Shawn has had firsthand experience of the challenges associated with providing access to quality education, musical and otherwise. A graduate of Bard College and Yale University, Shawn holds degrees in both music and Asian Studies and speaks Mandarin and Korean.

Magdalena Baczewska
Pianist

Polish-born pianist and harpsichordist Magdalena Baczewska is the Director of the Music Performance Program and Lecturer in Music at Columbia University, as well as Artistic Director of the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition in New York. Having performed as soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, China National Symphony, and Macao Symphony, among others, she has also appeared in major concert halls around the world and enjoys an extensive collaboration with the Oscar and Grammy Award-winning composer Tan Dun. Baczewska holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Mannes College The New School for Music and her doctorate from the Manhattan School of Music.

Angela Yu
Current Student, Columbia College

Angela is currently a sophomore at Columbia College, majoring in Economics and French. She is also a participant of the Columbia-Juilliard Exchange program, through which she is able to pursue her academic interests at Columbia and her passion for piano at Juilliard. Aside from taking courses at both institutions, Angela is deeply involved in non-profit initiatives that allow her to make an impact within the community. She is the vice president of Musical Mentors Collaborative, a student organization that brings free music education to children from low-income families.

Da Wang
Pianist

Da Wang has been honored as an Artist-in-Residence Fellow by The Cleveland Orchestra. He has been the winner of many piano competitions, such as The Cooper International Piano Competition and the MTNA Piano Competition. In 2005, he was admitted to Oberlin Conservatory with full scholarships and studied with Robert Shannon. Da has given nearly 50 solo concerts over 30 cities in the U.S., including The Kennedy Music Center, Carnegie Hall, and Severance Concert Hall. He also has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, Cincinnati Orchestra, Oberlin Orchestra and Utah Orchestra, etc. The great pianist Leon Fleisher once commented: “Da has extraordinary talents and amazing technique.”

Jinyang Zhao
Guqin artist

Zhao Jingyang is the founder and head of the Jinghua Guqin Society, and the principal director for the Central Conservatory of Music’s Pedagogy and Proficiency Certification Center. He has received numerous accolades and awards from competitions nationwide, and regularly performs and lectures at institutions in Beijing, greater China, and abroad.

Wenxing Xu
Current Graduate Student, Central Conservatory of Music

Xu Wenxing is now pursuing a master's degree in violin performance at the Central Conservatory of Music, mentored by Professor Yang Gefang. She was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music in 2014, following with Associate Professor Chen Xi. Ms. Xu won the second prize in the Fifth Chamber Music Competition in Hong Kong in February 2018.
