The Event
Join us on December 7 at Yale Center Beijing for a seminar exploring new strategies for attracting audiences to musicals. Building on last January’s “Musicals in China” session, this seminar brings together composer, lyricist, and playwright Ran Zhang; Han Mao, Special Research Fellow at the Yale School of Drama; and Mason Xu, Producer of The Legend of Hei and Chief Investment Officer of Qingshi Asset Management, to share fresh perspectives on how to bring viewers back into theaters.
Speakers

Ran Zhang
Composer, Lyricist & Playwright
Ran Zhang, a graduate from the School of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University, has spent more than 20 years in musical writing, lyric writing, and composition. His major works include Stenographer, Diao Chan, What Are You Thinking About?, Murder in the Garden in the Air, and First Love, among others.

Han Mao
Associate Scenic Designer, Creation Center, China Oriental Performing Arts Group
Special Research Fellow, Yale School of Drama
Mao Han is an Associate Scenic Designer at the Creation Center of China Oriental Performing Arts Group and a Special Research Fellow at the Yale School of Drama. She has received multiple awards, including the Silver Medal at the 2025 World Stage Design (WSD) Expo for her design for the immersive drama Beiping 1948. Her representative scenic design works include the opera La Bohème (commissioned by the Yale School of Music), the musical Cinderella, and the Peking Opera film Farewell My Concubine (directed by Yimou Zhang). She previously studied at the Affiliated High School of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Beijing Dance Academy.

Mason Xu
Chief Investment Officer, Qingshi Asset Management
Producer, The Legend of Hei
Mason Xu is Chief Investment Officer of Qingshi Asset Managemnet, and Producer of the acclaimed animated film The Legend of Hei. Previously, Xu served as Chief Financial Officer and Group Vice President at Bona Film Group, and as Co-Founder and CFO of China Digital TV Holding Co., Ltd. He is also a council member of the Beijing Film Association and an external mentor at the School of Drama and Film & Television, Communication University of China. He holds dual bachelor's degrees from Tsinghua University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He currently serves as President of the Harvard Club of Beijing.

Guoqing Xu
Founder & Chairman, Chainshine Financial Training
Guoqing Xu is the Founder and Chairman of Chainshine Financial Training, which was established in 1998 and has provided practical skills training such as valuation modeling for top-tier investment banks and private equity firms in China. Before founding Chainshine, he spent nearly a decade at J.P. Morgan and Lehman Brothers in New York, Hong Kong, and Beijing. He is also an avid follower of musicals and stage arts. Xu earned his bachelor’s degree from the School of Economics at Peking University in 1986 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1993.
