The Event

This event will be a special seminar on language learning and cognitive development by one of the world’s leading experts in this area. Yale alumna and University of Michigan Professor Twila Tardif will discuss "Using language to learn language: Lessons from young children”. The talk will focus on the psychology behind how young children quickly absorb languages and how to harness those abilities in the learning of second languages for children and adults. Professor Tardif will also discuss the effects of learning different languages on how we see the world and how our brains process information.

The Speaker(s)

Twila Tardif
Professor (Yale MSc '88, MPhil & Ph.D '93) at University of Michigan

Professor Tardif is the author of two leading books and over 100 articles on childhood cognitive development and language learning, with a particular focus on China, Chinese and English. She has spoken around the world on these topics for leading research institutions. Professor Tardif has done extensive research in China since 1988 covering Beijing, Hubei, Sichuan and Jiangsu. She has served as the Founding Editor of the Journal of Psychology in Chinese Societies, Co-Editor of “Developmental Psychology in China” in the International Journal of Behavioral Development, and as a member of the editorial board of Child Development. Professor Tardif received her Master's degrees and Ph.D from Yale University, and is currently teaching at the University of Michigan. She is fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and conversant in French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.
