Yale Center Beijing, Coursera, and Lean In Beijing jointly invite you to a talk by Joy Chen, the world-renowned writer of the book “Do Not Marry Before 30” and former Los Angeles Deputy Mayor.

Joy Chen is an internationally-acclaimed creator of pop culture media in China. She is the former Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles, and the author of China's best-selling book Do Not Marry Before Age 30. The book debunks conventional wisdom that single women are “leftover” by their late 20s and helps them unlock their potential and discover their dreams. She is currently developing a movie with Wanda Media Group and another one with Alibaba Pictures. Additionally, she is working on a new novel. So far she has had four major careers: real-estate developer, Los Angeles deputy mayor, executive headhunter, and now writer and now pop culture creator.

Joy was born in the United States to immigrant parents. At age 31, Joy was appointed Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles. While Deputy Mayor, she was responsible for education and workforce development for America’s 2nd-largest city. Following her job in public service, Joy spent years as an elite corporate headhunter, where she found CEOs and other top talent for large global companies and helped those companies expand their operations across China. During this time, Joy herself was headhunted by China CITIC Press to write a self-improvement book for Chinese women. This resulted in the book “Do Not Marry Before Age 30”. It became a #1 best-seller across China and is inspiring a generation of modern Chinese women to be more free and confident in their lives.

For her work in helping women, Joy was honoured as China Woman of the Year by the All-China Women’s Federation, the Chinese government’s department for women.

Joy has been profiled as a modern female role model across various news, business and fashion media including: Vogue China, ELLE China, CCTV, Marie Claire China, Esquire China, Good Housekeeping China, Cosmopolitan China, People’s Daily Online, BTV, and CNN International.
