The Event

Developing solutions for global energy and climate challenges necessitates an understanding of China. This program examines China's economic rise in the context of its energy and environment, and the consequences of this rise within China and abroad.

Potential Student Presentation Topics:

  • Aaron Kurzak and Raja Muhammad Farrukh Zaman – Effective means to upscale China's carbon markets; Reviewing the 13th Five Year Plan to promote clean energy in China's private and public sector
  • Bing Lin Nyang and Hassaan Sipra – Green financing schemes for China's overseas investment projects
  • Sheryl Foo and Theresa McCarty - The development of a green financial ecosystem focusing on public-private partnerships and Green Banks for SMEs
  • Willie Khoo and Ralien Bekkers – Incentives for civic participation in addressing pollution in China; Exploring the environmental impact of China’s policy of building coal power plants in Pakistan near population centers
  • Yolanda Nava, Tiffany Tin Wing Sin and Emily Wier – Electronic vehicles (EVs) and clean technology in the auto sector
  • Yaolin Zhang and Milagros De Camps – Energy policy and incentives

The Speaker(s)

GAO Li
Deputy Director-General at Department of Climate Change, National Development and Reform Commission of China

Dr. LI Gao is Deputy Director-General of the National Development and Reform Commission of China's Department of Climate Change. He obtained his Ph.D. from Tsinghua University and one of his Master Degrees from Yale University. His research and policy analyses have focused primarily on sustainable development, environment and climate change in China. As one of China's chief negotiators, he has taken part in U.N. climate change negotiations since 2005. Since 2012, Dr. Li has focused more on the development of China's medium and long term climate change strategy. Currently he works to promote climate change legislation in China.
