The Event

The leaders will discuss both Chinese and western opinions on how to raise healthy, happy, creative children. How much should children play, and how much should they study? How can we teach young children to be moral, and what lessons should we teach them? How should parents balance the need for children to enjoy childhood with the need for children to prepare for competitive future realities? What programs exist to promote healthy, vibrant young people?

LANGUAGE

The language of the event will be English, with simultaneous translation into Chinese.

The Speaker(s)

Shan Huang
Principal at Beijing Normal University(BNU) Kindergarten

HUANG Shan is an elementary education researcher and principal of Beijing Normal University Kindergarten. She received numerous teaching awards and is a prolific author and editor. She is the author of 30+ award-winning papers and acts as chief editor of Child-Centered Education Research and Practice (Beijing Normal University Press) and Children’s Favorite Foods (East China Normal University Press).

Jennifer Ma
Founder and CEO of Little Oasis

Jennifer is the founder of Little Oasis, a center for families with kids 0-6 years old that offers parents and children a space to relax and play together and to make new friends. Winner of Most Innovative Product and Most Innovative Service at the 2015 Innobrand competition, little oasis is redefining family time for a new generation of parents in China.

Born in Tianjin, China, Jennifer moved with her family to New Zealand at a young age. She subsequently lived in Australia, the UK and is now back in Beijing. Her previous professional occupations include marketing director at L’Oreal (Australia) and consultant for Nestle (UK).

Nancy Schulman
Head at Avenues: New York City Early Learning Center

Nancy Schulman was one of the founders of Avenues: The World School, and serves as the head of its bilingual immersion nursery school, the largest Chinese immersion program in the United States. Nancy is one of the country’s most prominent and highly regarded early childhood educators, leaders and authors. She was the admissions director and a teacher at Horace Mann Lower School in New York from 1973 to 1990, the director of the 92nd Street Y Nursery School from 1990 to 2011 and has been involved in independent schools in New York City for more than 40 years. She is the co-author of Practical Wisdom for Parents: Demystifying the Preschool Years (Knopf, July 2007).

Ellen Birnbaum
Director at 92nd Street Y Nursery School

Ellen Birnbaum is a 30-year veteran of 92nd Street Y's Nursery School, where she began as an assistant teacher in 1981. She served as assistant and then associate director from 1996-2011, and assumed her new post as director in June 2011. She is co-author, with Nancy Schulman, of Practical Wisdom for Parents: Raising Self-Confident Children in the Preschool Years (Knopf, 2007).
