The Event
In anticipation of the upcoming U.S.–China Climate-Smart/Low-Carbon Cities Summit in Beijing, Ms. YAN Yan, President of SOHO China, and Dr. ZHANG Jianyu, Managing Director, Environmental Defense Fund China Program, will discuss how to achieve peak carbon dioxide emissions and develop energy-efficient buildings.

SOHO China President YAN Yan has played a pivotal role in advancing the Company to become China’s largest prime office developer, with a portfolio of over 5.5 million square meters. She has assisted in overseeing the launch of SOHO 3Q, the largest provider of shared office space for the China market. As an Aspen Global Leadership Fellow, YAN Yan has made a personal commitment to promoting energy conservation technology and green-building standards. Citing energy efficiency as a critical challenge to China’s growth, her mission is to encourage industry peers to adopt the SOHO China-developed “Energy Saving System" that reduces energy consumption in a building by over 30%.
Jianyu ZHANG
Managing Director of Environmental Defense Fund China Program
Starting from 1999, Zhang Jianyu has been working with Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a leading US environmental NGO and advocacy group, as Managing Director of its China program, which focuses on the use of market based instruments (MBIs) in solving environmental problems in China. Zhang Jianyu helped found and manage the first professional Joint Venture environmental consulting firm established in the People’s Republic of China. He served as China project consultant for U.S. Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA) implementing a Clean Production project sponsored by USEPA.
Zhang Jianyu is a visiting professor at School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University, a member of executive board of China Association of Non-Governmental Organization (CANGO), and an Aspen Institute China fellow. Zhang Jianyu is a member of the Lead Expert Group (LEG) for China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), Secretary General of China Low Carbon Alliance, the renowned expert body advising the Chinese government on environment and sustainability issues.
Zhang Jianyu got his advanced degrees from Tsinghua University, Stanford University, and Carnegie Mellon University.
