The Event

In recent decades we have seen more and more evidence that one's early childhood learning environment plays a significant role in life-long development. But in poor areas in rural China, quality early childhood education is not accessible to hundreds of thousands of young children. Through the experiences of Thousand Trees Equal Education Partners, Dr. Gan Wang will share how her non-profit organization develops appropriate curricular activities for resource-constrained preschool classrooms in rural China. Working with the local government to do teacher capacity building through a “training the trainers” model, Thousand Trees scales its efforts to improve quality and equity of preschool education in rural China.

Dr. Gan WANG
Yale Ph.D. '99, Co-Founder & Co-Chair of Thousand Trees Equal Education Partners, Beijing, Founder of The Little Oak Children's House in Beijing

Gan received her B.A. and M.A. from Peking University and Ph.D. in anthropology from Yale University. Returning to China, she founded an experimental preschool The Little Oak Children's House in 2001, where progressive education ideas are practiced. In 2011, in cooperation with Fuping Development Institute, Gan co-founded Thousand Trees Equal Education Partners (TTEEP), bringing high-quality and low-cost curriculum and teacher training to preschools serving low-income families all over China. TTEEP also runs its own demo school in a village in suburban Beijing. In 2016, TTEEP now serves 110,000 children in 1,300 preschools in rual China.

In addition to school management and teaching, Gan does teacher training, parent workshops, curriculum development, and writes on related topics. She also serves on various non-profit boards including Social Venture Partners International, Leping Foundation, and the progressive independent school The Putney School in Vermont, USA. Gan is also Founding Partner and Former Executive Chair at Social Venture Partners Beijing.
