The Event

Earlier in 2016, Serve for China initiated the Serve for China Fellowship program, aiming to recruit Fellows from top local and international universities, including Harvard, Yale, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Renmin University of China, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and others. This September, the 30 selected Fellows will visit poverty-stricken counties in Hunan, Jiangxi and Shandong province and will participate in activities aimed at helping to lift 1,000 pre-registered poverty-stricken locals out of poverty. Prior to visiting the above provinces, Serve for China will organize training programs for the 30 Fellows in Beijing. As one of the speakers for the training, Director JIAO Bo will provide a unique and realistic perspective of China's rural areas through a screening of his documentary Village Diary.

After the screening, JIAO Bo will share remarks about the filming experience and will discuss the challenges and opportunities of rural China with the Fellows.

Filmed over 373 days, Village Diary offers a snapshot of one year in the life of villagers and households in Shaoyu Village, Zibo, Shandong Province. It showcases the social issues facing rural China, including environmental issues, spiritual and material fulfillment, and various profound changes taking place in rural society. Village Diary has won multiple awards, including Best Documentary at the 15th China Huabiao Film Awards.

This screening and discussion event is open to the general public.

The Speaker(s)

JIAO Bo
Former Directing Curator at the Image Collection of The State Council Information Office of the People's Republic of China, adjunct professor at Nankai University

JIAO Bo is a distinguished Director at Central Studio of News Reels Production. He is a member of the China Photographers Association, an executive committee member of the Chinese Folklore Photography Association, and Chairman of the AllChina photographers' Association. He is also an adjunct professor at Nankai University and a visiting professor at Communication University of China, Nanguang College. In 2006 he was nominated for CCTV's “Touching China” Personality of the Year. In 2010, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at a photography exhibition in Hong Kong.

The Organizer

Serve for China is a non-profit organization authorized by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China. Founded by a group of Yale graduates, Serve for China admits fellows from top universities and sends them to impoverished villages in China to deliver high-quality public service and to engage in poverty-alleviation by promoting rural entrepreneurship.
