The Event

The Antarctic is one of the most pristine, and vulnerable regions on the Planet, and is rapidly changing under the impact of global warming. A better understanding of the Antarctic is key to analyzing changes in Earth’s ecosystem. Globally, women have been recognized for their cooperative skills, inclusiveness, and tendency to share and maintain public resources. The share of women in higher education has increased, but the percentage of women who occupy important decision-making and executive positions remains low, of less than 25% in science and technology, for example. It has become ever more important to increase women’s leadership and influence so we can be better equipped to deal with climate change and other challenges.

Homeward Bound (HB) is an innovative global initiative, and the first and largest all-female expedition to Antarctica. It aims to heighten the influence and impact of women with a science background in order to influence policy and decision making as it shapes our planet. The project was the idea of Fabian Dattner (leadership activist and partner at Dattner Grant) and Jess Melbourne Thomas (Antarctic Marine Ecological Modeler). In the next ten years, HB plans to select 1000 women from around the world and help them develop their leadership and influence in environmental protection, science, and policy, and further contribute to better protecting our planet Earth. The Chinese participants received support from Yabuli China Entrepreneurs Forum.

The Yale Center Beijing will host several Chinese participants of Homeward Bound 2018 and 2019 as well as renowned female entrepreneurs and scientists to share their experience with Antarctica, and talk about their plans to combat climate change, and protect our oceans and polar regions. Men and women of all backgrounds are welcome to join us!

The Speakers

Jing Wang
Mountaineer, Board Director, President & Co-founder, Toread Holdings Group Co. Ltd.

Ms. Wang is a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University, a Member of the Explorers Club, board member of the China Association of Scientific Expedition, founder and international president of the Everest Future Foundation. She was named the International Veteran Climber by the Nepalese Government in 2014 and HPRR and Honorary Tourism Goodwill Ambassador in 2015. She has conquered peaks of over 8000 meters nine times (including three times for the Everest) and completed her Explorers Grand Slam (reaching the North and South poles and the highest peak on every continent) in 143 days. She is a member of the fifth board of the Society of Ecology and Entrepreneur (SEE). She has also authored two books based on her mountaineering experiences, Life at Altitude and Silence of the Summit, and produced a film based on former.

Jiangeng Zhu
Associate Professor at China University of Political Science and Law, Doctor of Law

Dr. Zhu's main research fields are Public International Law and Law of the Seas. Her major publications include The Precautionary Principle and Marine Environmental Protection and International Laws on Marine Environmental Protection.

Wei Zhou
Oceans Campaigner, Greenpeace

Ms. Zhou works mainly on the promotion of sustainable fisheries and the conservation of marine biodiversity. The projects she is responsible for include research on small trash fish fisheries and their implications for the development of sustainable fisheries in China, as well as advocating for the creation of marine protected areas in the Antarctic.

Charlene Ren
HB 2018 Member, Founder of MyH2O Water Information Network

MyH2O is a crowd-based platform that connects clean water resources to rural communities. Since 2015, data from over thousands of villages have been collected . Ms. Ren holds a dual M.S. in Environmental Engineering and Technology & Policy from MIT, with a research focus on information-based policy in rural India’s water and sanitation sector. She’s also a 2016 Echoing Green Fellow.

Yiting Wang
Yale FES '14, HB 2018 Member, Program Manager at WWF China

Ms. Wang works on developing multistakeholder initiatives on climate and energy, green finance, and ocean conservation at WWF China. She is also the board chair of China Youth Climate Action Network. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College and earned her master of environmental science from Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies with several journal publications on carbon finance, climate justice and international development in the field of social ecology.

Binbin Wang
HB 2019 Member, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Peking University & Special Advisor for UN’s Southern Climate Partnership Incubator

Ms. Wang has devoted her career to leadership on climate change and sustainable development issues. She was the China Climate Lead of Oxfam and has monitored the UNFCCC process closely since COP15. She led her team to design and implement innovative campaigns to support the most vulnerable people who are the least responsible for climate change, but suffer the most from its effects. Her pilot project in Shaanxi Province was nominated as the ‘Global Pioneer of Change’, one of the “21 Best Cases on Low Carbon Sustainable Development in Developing Countries.”

Yaxin Yan
HB 2019, Consultant at the International Finance Corporation

At International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, Ms. Yan works with the Inclusive Business team to support companies that engage in global poverty reduction and sustainable development by promoting inclusive business models in developing countries. She graduated from Cornell University with MPA concentrating in sustainable finance, and from Peking University with B.A. degrees in Sociology and Economics.

Zhiyao Lu
Yale PhD '14, HB 2019 Member, Senior Program Officer at SEE Foundation

Ms. Lu is in charge of the Green Supply Chain and Climate Change program, part of the pollution prevention project and international cooperation at SEE Foundation. She received her PhD in Ethnoecology from Minzu University of China and Yale University, and graduated from Ocean University of China with a B.A. in Marine Ecology.
