The Event

As the world's largest consumer of energy and emitter of greenhouse gases, China has the ability to singlehandedly shape the course of the global climate system. As part of Prof. Angel Hsu's 'China's Energy and Environmental Sustainability Class,' come to a special dialogue with Dr. Jiang Kejun, a leading expert on China's energy and climate future as well as a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and Dr. Chai Qimin, one of China’s climate negotiators. Following the Q&A, please stay for an opportunity to hear from Yale-NUS College and Yale University undergraduate and graduate students in the class present their ideas on policy recommendations for China to address some of its most pressing challenges on air pollution, climate change, and environment during a reception with drink and refreshment.

The Speaker

Jiang Kejun, Ph.D.
Researcher, Energy Research Institute, National Development and Reform Commission

Dr. Jiang Kejun served as the director of Energy Research Institute (ERI), National Development and Reform Commission, China from 2000 to 2010. He began research on climate change relative to energy policy analysis in 1993, focusing on energy technology policy assessment, energy supply policy assessment, renewable energy development and energy conservation. From 1997, Dr. Jiang participated in Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Third Assessment Report and was a lead author for the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (Working Group Three Chapter 3). Dr. Jiang's recent studies include energy and emission scenarios, assessment on energy and fuel tax, research on China's potential to achieve its energy targets and development of the Integrated Policy Assessment model. He received his Ph.D. in Social Engineering from the Department of Tokyo Institute of Technology.

International Cooperation Department in National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation (NCSC)

Dr. Chai Qimin now is the director and associate professor of International Cooperation Department in NCSC, deputy director of Research Center for Green Finance and Sustainable Development in University of International Business and Economics, and guesting professor of Research Center for Contemporary Management in Tsinghua University and Guizhou Institute of Technology. He currently serves as the delegate of Chinese Government Delegation of UN Climate Negotiations, and advisor of local governments for Low Carbon City and Emission Trading Scheme Pilots, columnist of China Daily and Caixin Finance.

Angel Hsu, Yale PhD ’13
Assistant Professor of Social Sciences, Yale-NUS College; Adjunct, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies

Dr. Angel Hsu is an Assistant Professor of Social Sciences (Environmental Studies) at Yale-NUS College and Adjunct of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. She is Founder and Director of Data-Driven Lab, a multidisciplinary research team of policy researchers, data scientists, programmers, and visual communicators. Her research explores the intersection of science and policy and the use of data-driven approaches to understand environmental sustainability, particularly in the areas of climate change and energy, urbanization and air quality. Her invited TED 2018 Annual Conference talk on China's climate leadership has been viewed more than a million times. She holds a PhD in Forestry and Environmental Studies from Yale University.
