The Event

We invite you to go through a virtual journey of “The World in Maps 1400–1600,” a new exhibition at Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library that presents a selection of the most impressive and historically important maps in the library’s collection from the late Medieval and Early Modern periods, with Raymond Clemens, who is one of the organizers of this exhibition and the Curator of Early Books and Manuscripts at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University.

This exhibition presents maps from several different historical groups and demonstrates how maps functioned to place people within a larger world context. While primarily focusing on European maps, it also includes Middle Eastern and Asian world maps to illustrate common elements and also highlight significant differences. In addition, the exhibition presents some map forgeries and how they were determined to be fakes using scientific and historic analysis.

Raymond Clemens

Raymond Clemens is Curator of Early Books and Manuscripts at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library of Yale University. Prior to coming to Yale, Ray was an Associate Professor of History at Illinois State University and was the Acting Director of the Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies. He is the author, with Timothy Graham, of Introduction to Manuscript Studies (Cornell, 2007). He is the editor of The Voynich Manuscript: A Photofacsimile with Essays (Yale, 2016). He has held the Andrew Mellon Fellowship and the Newberry Library/British Academy Exchange Fellowship. His Ph.D. is from Columbia University (1997).

Inc. the Yale Center Beijing is pleased to host the Greenberg Distinguished Colloquium, which will convene thought leaders from all sectors who, in the spirit of Mr. Greenberg, play pivotal roles in building bridges among China, the U.S., and the rest of the world.

Mr. Greenberg has been a member of Yale Center Beijing’s Executive Council and retired as the Chairman and CEO of American International Group (AIG). In 2018, he was awarded the China Reform Friendship Medal.
